## How Much Bandwidth Do You Really Need? {#bandwidth-needs}
Streaming video requires steady, jitter-free throughput rather than brief bursts of speed:
- **Standard Definition (SD):** 5 Mbps minimum
- **High Definition (1080p HD):** 15 Mbps per simultaneous stream
- **4K Ultra HD:** 25 to 50 Mbps per simultaneous stream
If multiple devices in your household stream or game simultaneously, calculate your total needs by multiplying the stream count by 20 Mbps, plus an overhead margin of 30%.
2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz: Choosing the Right Band
- **2.4 GHz:** Long range through walls, but prone to interference from household electronics and limited bandwidth.
- **5 GHz:** Shorter range, but significantly higher throughput and much less channel congestion.
Whenever possible, connect your streaming box or Smart TV to the 5 GHz band, or use a direct Ethernet cable.
Optimal Router Placement & QoS
Place your router centrally, elevated off the floor, away from dense concrete walls and large metal appliances. If your router supports **Quality of Service (QoS)**, enable it to prioritize streaming video and media traffic over routine background downloads.
